Livecraft Discord Server

Being that I can’t get the server online in the near future, I’ve made a Discord server. If you haven’t heard of Discord, imagine IRC chat (if you know that), mixed with Skype and Teamspeak. Long story short, it’s great, and here’s the link to join! If you don’t already have Discord, I highly recommend downloading it.

There is no requirement to join, other than signing into Discord.

  1. Download Discord (optional, recommended)
  2. Join Livecraft’s Server

Livecraft Update

I’d like to address growing concern regarding Livecraft’s future. I’ve had it offline for some time, due to various concerns, so I’ll be explaining what is going on. I’ve been quite busy with work in my personal life, as well as dealing with computer hardware problems on the server. The server software that was used to run the server no longer functions as expected, and the original developer has abandoned the project (ahtenus’ minecraft-init). I have since created my own version; however, it does not perform all of the functions necessary to run Livecraft properly; therefore, Livecraft cannot run as expected at the moment. The server computer itself is heavily underpowered and I do not have the funds to upgrade it.

So, what does this mean for Livecraft?

Livecraft’s regular operations are on a hiatus until the following can be certain:

  1. Either a new computer to host it, or enough dependable money to rent a VPS monthly
  2. Staff familiar with whichever setup it will use, so it can be administrated without me
  3. When I can get more free time
  4. If #1 involves a new computer, we will need a working minecraft-init systemd bash script.

Livecraft is something I care about greatly; however, I don’t want to force myself to run it when it does not meet the expectations I have for the server. To put it bluntly, I would rather provide no server than a very poor experience.

I aim to have Livecraft online in a future date, but I honestly cannot guarantee a date when it will return. All I can say for now is that I do intend on bringing it back

Livecraft Is Currently Offline

Notice: Livecraft is currently offline until further notice. Due to hardware difficulties and lack of funding, a repair is not possible currently and may take up to four weeks to complete. I apologize for the inconvenience.

Apologies for the downtime

If you have been experiencing difficulty connecting the last few days, it was due to some issues related to the router provided by my cable company. Luckily, I’ve upgraded, and now have a dedicated router which should work much better. All connectivity issues should be resolved; Livecraft is also now configured to automatically update its own DNS host information, which means that if Livecraft’s IP changes, the domain is always accessible.

Have fun!

Now 1.8 ready!

Hey guys, just a quick update, the server is now 1.8 compatible. All 1.8 features should be working perfectly, but there were some issues updating, so tell a staff member if you have issues.

Have fun!

Some Bug Fixes

Hello, just a quick update to let you know that I’ve fixed some issues. Fixing items with anvils should now work, and mcMMO should be working better than it was before. Although it was not noticeable on the user side, mcMMO has been causing many issues on the server side of things. All should be good now.

In other news, I will be doing periodic plugin updates, so please pardon the occasional server reboot as this is necessary to update plugins.

Sponge & 1.8 Progress

Hello, the Sponge project has been progressing very rapidly and as a result, Sponge may be available by the end of the year. Livecraft may experience a time with a lack of plugins, but this will be necessary during the conversion process. Livecraft will always have the core features, as well as MCBans and a block logging plugin such as Prism. As for the 1.8 update progress, we have a spawn built and ready to use in the next 1.8 map. This will make the update much quicker, as we can copy the new spawn from the temporary world used to build it to the new 1.8 world. As always, I’ll keep you all updated.

The Future of Livecraft

Hello, given recent developments in the Minecraft multiplayer scene, the future of Livecraft and many other servers is in question. The Bukkit project is no longer providing downloads or source code, leaving servers and developers to find another project or move on from Minecraft. In light of this, there have been groups that have formed to create a replacement for Bukkit. One such project is called “Sponge“, which is a project which aims to continue where Bukkit left off, using a clean codebase and an improved API. As a result, I have decided that Livecraft will use the Sponge server software once it is stable enough for daily use. Consequently, the Minecraft 1.8 update has been delayed considerably, and may not even happen before the year is out. Here’s to a brighter, yellow, and more absorbent (ba dum tss) future for Livecraft.

tl;dr: Bukkit is dead, Spigot is on life support. A new project called Sponge has potential to succeed Bukkit. Livecraft will most likely not update to Minecraft 1.8 before the year ends.

Long Live Minecraft

Some unfortunate news I have to report today. I discovered that the Bukkit project has been more or less discontinued as a result of a recent DMCA notice filed against them. As a result, all Bukkit downloads have been removed and are no longer available for download, and most Bukkit staff have formally resigned. Similarly, the Spigot project received a similar notice, and has also removed all downloads; however, the Spigot team has released a program which can update Spigot through binary patching, allowing the project to continue updating within legal boundaries. As a result of these recent developments, the future of Livecraft and the 1.8 update are in question. The server will continue to be online, but many difficulties, such as the lack of future updates may be encountered.

I would like to give a personal thank you to all of the talented people who have contributed to both Bukkit and Spigot, and I have appreciated being able to have used Bukkit and Spigot for the past four years. The software was useful to hundreds of thousands, and it will be missed. I do hope that the legal issues can be resolved, but for now, the futures of both Bukkit and Spigot are unknown.

Regarding my minecraft-init and mc*NIX projects, I will update them shortly to allow binary patching of Spigot and remove downloads to both the Bukkit and Spigot projects, considering it is no longer possible to download them directly.

Regards,
Jonathan Alfonso (alfonsojon)

Time Warner Network Problems

Hi, I would like to update you all on some recent network problems with Time Warner Cable that have been affecting Livecraft directly for the past few days. Around 24 hours ago, Time Warner Cable experienced a nationwide service outage which affected Livecraft by causing a large amount of lag and times where the server was not accessible at all. It seems the issue has been dealt with upstream; however, I feel that the quality of the connection has degraded. This may result in the server being slower to respond or occasionally disconnecting players. I would like to announce that this is unfortunately out of my control, and I will be looking to other internet service providers as I feel that Time Warner Cable is not adequate. I appreciate your cooperation as I attempt to work around this issue.

On a personal note, I suggest not getting Time Warner internet. Get Charter or Comcast, you will be a much happier customer.
